New Industry-Academia program to Collaborates with Engineering-Students AI, IoT in India: Samsung PRISM

India’s largest smartphone brand and most trusted consumer electronics — Samsung, is launching a unique industry-academia program – Samsung PRISM (Inspiring & Preparing Minds of Students) to stimulate the Indian innovation ecosystem and develop capabilities in students who meet the needs of the industry.

The program, which will be run by Samsung R&D Institute Bangalore (SRI-B), is Samsung’s largest R&D facility outside of com, aimed at including top government engineering colleges in India’s National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings. So far, SRI-B has signed MoUs with 10 engineering colleges. It will add more colleges in the next few months.

Once the program begins, SRI-B will collaborate with students and faculty in these engineering colleges, giving them research and development projects, which run for four to six months. Students will get to work on projects in the field of cutting edge technology such as Artificial Intelligence (including Vision Tech), Machine Learning, Internet & F Things and Connected Devices, 5G networks to solve real world problems.

Each project will be carried out by a team of three students and a professor, an SRI-B mentor who will guide and train them, and conduct regular reviews. Each engineering college can have multiple teams, and students will be selected based on the test taken by SRI-B.

Students will also be encouraged to file papers and patents with SRI-B.

During the lockdown period, the program is conducted online. The teams worked on their projects at home, and have been trained by the mentors above video classes and webinars. Students can log on to to update their project details and periodic reviews.

SRI-B launched a pilot program for the Samsung PRISM last year, with 150 teams working on unique R&D projects. The teams worked on ‘Make for India’ projects such as handwriting recognition for Indian languages and AI based Indian translation. Some teams worked on research projects such as intelligent navigation through in-home object object recognition and improving video quality in low light conditions.

By the years, SRI-B has been working with a number of universities and educational institutes like Indian University of Science Bangalore (IISC), International Institute of Information Technology Bangalore (IIIT-B), IIT-Kharagpur and IIT-Kanpur for research collaboration. As artificial intelligence and its application on multimedia and vision tech, IoT, sensors and networks.

All team members will be certified by SRI-B upon completion of the project. So far, 46 teams have been recognized for their exceptional work and have also been awarded. SRI-BA Vellore Institute of Technology in Technology, SRM Institute of Science in Science and Technology .G, Manipal Academy Higher in Higher Education, M.S. Ramaiya Institute of Technology, R.V. College of Engineering, B.M.S.

SRI-B focuses on technologies surrounding communication protocols, multimedia (including camera solutions), intelligence, payments, web services, memory, networks and IoT. The main focus of the R&D center is to create global product disparities and solutions for the Indian market and deliver value to customers by recognizing unique insights. SRI-B has proficiency in networks including artificial intelligence, machine learning, natural language processing, Internet of Things (IoT), ugly reality and GG. It has also filed more than 2,900 patents in India so far.
